The output from my terminal when solving the issue follows immediately below, and then the original question after sudo dpkg -i ~/liberror-perl_0.17029-1_all.deb No such error message appeared during my previous attempts to install git, just the error message concerning the missing liberror-perl package. Interestingly, after doing that and then trying again with apt to install git, I was informed that I had a 'broken install'. I solved the issue by downloading the problem liberror-perl package direct from an ubuntu repository as a deb file. Thanks to everybody who took time to answer.
